Whether your kids have moved out and you’re left with a room that nobody uses, or perhaps you’ve been using the room for storage- it can be tricky to envision the room being functional again. Start by clearing out the room and  about think about possibilities for your spare bedroom. Take a look at these 10 spare bedroom solutions.

1.       Home Office

A common use for a spare bedroom is the home office. It’s practically a necessity if you work from home, but if you don’t, it’s still a great place to get down to business. Make sure you have a desk that is large enough to keep your computer on and do paper work on. A comfortable chair is a must-have as well as good desk lighting. Keep in mind you’ll need a plenty of storage and a file cabinet for your important documents.

2.       Guest Bedroom

Another seemingly obvious solution is to make your spare into a guest bedroom. If you’ve already got a bed in the room- you’re halfway there! Start by picking out new bedding, something fresh. Give the room a brand new coat of paint to match the bedding for a coordinated look. Make guests feel comfortable to unpack their bags by emptying dresser drawers and providing empty hangers. Fresh flowers, an alarm clock, and a bedside book sets a welcoming tone. Learn how to stain hardwood floors for a  really classy look.

3.       Play Room

This is perfect if you have young children or grandchild in your family. A playroom gives the kids a safe, contained space to play with their toys, and lets you keep the rest of your home neat and tidy! Start by childproofing the room with corner bumpers and outlet covers. Play tiles come in a variety of colors and finishes (from bold colors to faux wood) and are easy to clean.

4.       Home Gym

If getting to the gym is the hardest part of your routine, then consider investing in a home gym. While play tiles are great for a kids play room, they’re also good for a home gym- especially if you plan on using free weights, as they prevent any dents in carpet or hardwood. Exercise equipment can be expensive, but it could pay for itself over time when compared to the cost of a gym membership!

5.       Craft or Hobby Room

A craft room or hobby room is the perfect solution to those who have projects or hobbies that often wind up taking over the kitchen table. Bring in  a large table to work at and appropriate storage for your supplies. This could also be a great space for collectors. It’s a place where you can display the whole collection in one glorious room!

6.       Media Room

This is perfect if you live with movie, music, or video-game lovers. Make this space the ultimate tech hangout and reclaim your living room! Bring in the electronics you need and a comfortable couch and get ready to kick back. It’s important to provide enough storage for media like CD or DVD racks and bins for any video game controllers and accessories.

7.       Meditation Room

If you lead a stressful life, consider turning your spare bedroom into a meditation room. Even if you don’t meditate, having a physical “happy place” can help you unwind at the end of a long day. Paint the walls a light, soothing color. If needed, replace the overhead light with a soft, lower-watt bulb . Bring in a comfortable chair or pouf (if you plan on meditating). Perhaps a small indoor fountain or calming scented candle will help you loosen up.

8.       Home Library

Having a home library is a dream come true for bibliophiles! Installing around the room shelving is not as difficult as it may seem. IKEA sell inexpensive shelves that can be installed quickly and easily. Be sure to bring in a cozy chair and a good reading light. You may also want to put a desk in if you’re likely to be reading for work or school.

9.       Dream Closet

A small (or large!) spare bedroom that isn’t really being used is the perfect excuse to create your dream closet. Paint it your favorite color and bring in rolling racks filled with your favorite frocks. If you have the budget, consider installing a custom closet organization unit. Add chaise lounge and a fabulous light fixture and you’re on your way to supermodel style.

10.   Game Room

Lastly, a game room is a family-friendly alternative to spending a night in front of the TV. Pull in a card table and enough chairs for the whole crew. Add in a few extra fun accessories like a popcorn machine or a mini fridge filled with snacks and get ready to have family fun all night!
